THE SOLITUDE OF SUSANA SAINT JOHN

The Coyote Project, Ecuador

A Mexican-Ecuadorian group that presents itself as an alternative type of initiative, different from the latest trends in the performing arts.  This groups dives into the deep spirit of our culture, using contemporary language to interpret the current man and his context. They evidence man’s struggle with modernity and its excesses, consumerism, war, and more.

THE SOLITUDE OF SUSANA SAINT JOHN

This play is inspired by one of the characters in the novel “Pedro Páramo” by the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo. Susana Saint John is the possibility of the other, of otherness; she can be a ray of light in a fateful, hapless world, but she is not the redeemer–at best she saves herself.

The characters in this play – constantly rambling – wander without knowing where, looking for something, yet what that is, they do not know. They travel through a physically and psychically limited space; oblivion and loneliness surround them. The characters are camouflaged among debris of voices, objects, and broken memories, and it is from there where they come out to remember the past, the only time in which they live.
